In today’s Music Market, bands are looking for the very best deals. They want to record at the best studio, but for the least amount of money to create an EP or Album for distribution. Because of today’s economy most musicians have little money as is and often have a job to support them.

When you think of making a record and the costs involved most would agree that the studio is where the main bulk of money should be spent. You hope that the room, the gear, the engineer and producer will all combine into a musical force in which to guide you through the album making process then enabling you to create the best possible representation of your bands music.

What’s the next step? Well to release that album of course. But before you do that, your finished mix of any song must now be mastered.

Unless you’re in the mastering business, I think it’s safe to say that most people recognize famous Producers or Engineers. You don’t often hear about Mastering Engineers making millions of dollars because they’ve had a hit record. In stead it’s the opposite. The most recognized Mastering Engineers have often had a dozen or more hit records making very little from them while the Producer can make quite a fortune. Yet the Mastering Engineer plays just as an important role as the Producer or Engineer.

With todays economic instability’s and job insecurity’s bands and recording studios alike have had to really penny pinch. And it’s primarily because of this, that I believe that the Mastering of a record has taken a back seat to the recording of an album. Bands are no longer seeking out their favorite Mastering Engineers as they would Producer’s or Recording Studio’s. Instead they rely on an “all in one box” strategy.

Today the smaller studio that can offer an all in one package is the one that is reaping the benefits. The Producer has now become the Engineer as well as the Mastering Engineer.

Smaller recording studios using DAW’s like ProTools or Logic have built in mastering capabilities. Not to mention that thousands of plugins and software upgrades are out there that can offer the latest in mastering tools.

So what’s wrong with this, you’re asking?

Most Mastering Engineers have two very important things going for them that I think the smaller studio doesn’t.

#1. Mastering Engineers (most of them anyway) probably master hundreds if not thousands of records a year. That’s ALL they do. And more importantly they have the ear and talent for it.

I’m not saying that just because you’re a Producer or an Engineer that you can’t be a good Mastering Engineer, I’m just saying that with your time spent on other aspects of making a bands record, you’re probably more efficient at one thing as appose to another.

The Mastering Engineer’s job as quoted by John Scott (The G-Man) is to “shape, sculpt, scoop, equalize, compress and finesse the final mix into a sonic splendour.” And just as the Producer’s job is to help the band shape and mold their songs into a final professional mix (I’m trivializing this I know), the Mastering Process is what can give your songs that certain sparkle which can then be sent out into today’s vast music market.

Perhaps my biggest argument for bands to choose a separate facility for Mastering is the most obvious.

#2. The equipment.

Bottom line is that most Mastering facilities have custom or highly customized signal processing equipment. Take a look at the Manley Line of signal processing equipment. The gear is not only expensive beyond belief (as most recording gear is) but it’s fine tuned for one purpose. Not to say that you couldn’t use a Manley Mastering Compressor/Limiter for recording purposes but its design was purposely thought out for the art, science and sound of Mastering.

Software plugins although useful and in some cases can come close to matching most things in todays field, can not yet provide the subtle nuances that custom built equipment can. Nor can they match the quality that certain professional gear with vacuum tube circuitry can.

Often times the room itself has been designed specifically for Mastering music in. This gives a more accurate representation of what’s going when the Mastering Engineer is sculpting your songs.

I know you have saved and saved to get into the studio. And I know that you’ve done your research on the studio and on the guy or girl behind the console that will help you to shape your art into something more amazing.  But please consider having your Mastering done by a professional and in a professional Mastering Room.

It can literally mean the difference between your song becoming the next hit or a miss in today’s market.

Corey here, letting you know that we’re in the studio this week. We’ll be recording three new songs for release via a free download.

We’re also going to be entering the Fox Seeds 2012 this year with hopes of being the first band ever to capture the Fan Favorite Vote for the 2nd time ever, unless the Fox picks us for the Top 20. Which we hope they will.
